The high altitude of Tenuta Delle Terre Nere

Mount Etna – The Gods Are Pleased

No less than Zeus himself banished Hephaestus, the god of blacksmiths and artisans to the depths beneath Mount Etna.  That he remains there today was evident in my visit this past year, the volcano’s smoke plume confirming that the god’s ancient forges are fully operational.  The mountain’s slopes, however, support artisans of a different nature.  Here, at surprisingly high elevations, and with the benefit of unique volcanic soils, dedicated and experienced winemakers are producing beautiful wines.

It was not always the case.  A mere generation ago, Sicily seemed destined to produce vast quantities of undistinguished wine.  The hot climate of the island’s lowlands supplied the means for high yields of poor quality product.  There was little thought to raising the bar, let alone standing alongside some of Italy’s finest wines.  All that has changed, however, and Etna DOC seems to be leading the way, finding itself inundated with novice and experienced winemakers, all striving to produce exceptional wine.  My recent trip to the current darling of Italy’s wine scene confirmed that there are some true success stories.

Etna itself boasts an annual production of approximately 78,500hl (12,572hl DOC).  The DOC comprises 650 hectares out of some 2000 for the overall Etna region.  Classifications include Etna Rosso requiring a minimum of 80% Nerello Mascalese with a maximum of 20% Nerello Cappuccio.  Its Rosso Riserva must see 4 years’ age including at least 1 year in wood.  Etna Bianco requires a minimum of 60% Carricante with the Bianco Superiore boosting that to a minimum of 80% (from Milo only).  There is also an Etna Rosato and Etna Spumante.

I had the great fortune of visiting two of the DOC’s most reputable estates, Tenuta delle Terre Nerre and Passopisciaro.  I found both to be highly deserving of the praise they receive for their work in the vines and the cellar.  This is my post on the former.

Tenuta delle Terre Nere

Marco de Grazia, he of Barolo fame, came to Etna in 2002 determined to do justice to the unique terroir of the region.  Tenuta delle Terre Nere is the creation of Marco and his brother and consists of just over 30 hectares of vines divided into 10 parcels.  Those parcels are contained in four distinct areas which the estate labels as “Crus” following the example of Burgundy.  They are Calderara Sottana, Santa Spirito, Guardiola, and Feudo di Mezzo.

I admit that I was somewhat doubtful at first about the Burgundian analogy.  Touring the various parcels, however, caused a shift towards the idea.  Certainly each “Cru” displayed its own characteristics.  Elevations for the sites varied from 400 to 1000+ meters above sea level.  Soil types differed markedly due to the accumulation of lava flows over time.  There were clearly distinct micro-climates displaying significant diurnal temperature variations.  All of the above combined to differentiate each area, and in some cases, each plot from another.  If one needed further proof, it was in the wine.

This is not an estate given to excess.  The emphasis here is on a light hand in both the cultivation of the grapes and the vinification process.  At every turn, you could see the effort to coax the best from the vines so as to give a clear expression of each of the unique mountainside terroirs.  While no effort is spared to achieve the best the land has to offer, that simply, to my eye and taste, did not equate to manipulation.  I liked Marco De Grazia’s comment as to his approach in producing the estate’s Etna Rosato.  “In trying to find balance, you walk a thin line.  The Platonic ideal, as I see it, would be the rosé that has the body of a white and the soul of a red, if that makes any sense.  Anyway, that’s what I’m looking for: a wine that’s joyful without being frivolous; that has tension, but is not austere.”  These are not the thoughts of a winemaker given to over doing things.  This is a gentleman that respects his terroir, and is committed to a deft touch in bringing its nuances forward.

Calderara Sottana at Tenuta Delle Terre Nere

One could argue that coaxing the best from the vines takes far more work than a one size fits all approach.  It’s easy to swing a sledgehammer, much more difficult to wield the scalpel.  For example, Vigneti di Guardiola claims the highest elevation among the four “Crus”.  The vines there are 50 to 80 years old.  At that height, their trunks are noticeably smaller despite their admirable age – it being a struggle to survive.  That fact, combined with the peculiarities of the site, forces the estate to maintain the vines solely by hand.  No tractors, no power tillers, no horses, just men and women amongst the rows.  A labour worthy of Hercules, but it’s the only way to achieve the estate’s goal of being completely true to the terroir.

Did the wines reflect the approach championed by the estate?  Did the individuality of the Crus come through?  I’d have to say that was the case.  Here are my tasting notes, all with respect to the 2013 vintage save for the separate comments on the 2014 barrel samples.

2013 Etna Rosso

This is a blend of Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio and is the estate’s entry level Rosso.  You could be fooled into thinking you were looking at a Pinot Noir given the light colour.  Lovely balance between the fruit and the acidity, this is a lively and fresh wine ready for drinking now.  Don’t let the lightness of approach throw you off, there is texture and complexity here, the palate offering up a savoury herb note.  One of those reds that might even benefit from a slight chilling on a hot summer day.

2014 Rosato DOC

I loved this Rosé.  Sporting a pale onion skin colour, it was immediately apparent that the wine was conceived as a Rosato from the start and was not just produced as an afterthought as is sadly the case with so many of its kin.  This has immense and immediate appeal.  It was produced from a selected parcel of 100% Nerello Mascalese grown in the Santo Spirito site specifically for this wine.  Classically crisp, yet with a surprising viscosity and wonderful saline note at the end.  Not a fan of Rosé?  This one will make you a convert.  I kept smiling and having to hold myself back from gulping at the risk of not doing the class displayed justice.

2013 Santo Spirito Etna Rosso DOC

2013 was a more trying year for Etna’s estates, the weather was cool with changeable conditions during the harvest producing more classic, almost austere wines in some cases.  Certainly, this wine was somewhat linear and focused, but in a good way.   Although this “cru’s” signature can be fleshier due to the somewhat lower elevation of the site when compared to its siblings, there was balance and complexity here.  Add a captivating “sweet note” at the end of a lingering finish and you have a winner.

2013 Guardiola Etna Rosso DOC

More lifted than the Santo Spiritos.  This struck me, overall, as a more elegant wine.  The Guardiola plots are situated at the highest vineyard elevation in Europe producing a strikingly minerality and acidity.  This is a wine that will take some time to unwind and relax.  It is a high wire artist.  You fear the fall, but can’t look away.

Very Good (approximately $37 plus in the U.S.)

2013 Cuvee Delle Vigne Niche Etna Bianco DOC

This wine is produced from 100% Carricante.  Barrel fermented, aged in larger oak barrels, this is somewhat of a rarity given that this varietal makes up only 4% of the DOC’s vines.  There is a distinct sense of the lees here as if you were drinking a textured Chardonnay from the Cote de Beaune.  Complex, deep, balanced, and possessing a lovely finish.  It’s all there.   Completely captivating.

2014 Sato Spirito Etna Rosso DOC

You are immediately reminded of the contrast of vintage when going from the 2013 offerings to 2014.  The latter year was by most accounts, an outstanding one on Etna (and Sicily for that matter) producing wines that seemingly have it all – that rare combination of ripeness with structure and the potential for longer term aging.

This wine displayed a greater concentration than that of the 2013 with good balance and a spectacular bouquet.  Although still in barrel at the time of my tasting, I can recommend it without hesitation.

2014 La Vigne di Dom Peppino  (pre-phylloxera)

This is a rare wine.   It is produced from two small parcels of land that survived the phylloxera scourge with the result that the vines in question are over 130 years old and still producing on their original rootstock.  Even from the barrel it was lifted and completely balanced.  It seemed to evolve and display a variety of complex notes during the scant minutes I managed to allow it in the glass.  One of the few wines I’ve found myself unable to put down for fear of missing something.  Remarkable.
